About susan

I was employed as a Professor of Psychology (School Psychology) at Central Michigan University 1981-2014.  During those years I focused on writing for publication but looked forward to having the time to explore my interest in art.

My artistic journey

I began taking art classes after I retired and moved to Ann Arbor. I initially focused on watercolor because I loved the transparency of the colors.

More recently, I took mixed media classes in which I created collages by cutting up some of my “failed” watercolor paintings and printouts of photos, but I was not happy with the resulting artwork. I had lost the translucence of watercolor. For that reason, I began experimenting with using tissue paper to create art and discovered that I love “painting with paper.” To do so, I first make designs on tissue paper using rubbings of various textures, stencils with acrylic paint, and photo images transferred to the paper. Variations in color are also achieved by layering the pieces of paper and applying paint under, or on top of, the papers. Over the past year, I have continued to improve and expand my techniques.

I have participated in juried shows, including at the Gutman Gallery ("Anything Goes," 2025) and West Side Art Hop 2024. As a member of Kaleidoscope Artist Collective, I have also exhibited in public libraries, Sweetwater's Cafe, and other Ann Arbor venues.
